Ohio mother accused of killing 6-year-old son claims boyfriend wanted kids gone, reports say

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio — A woman accused of killing her young son while attempting to abandon him at a park, then reporting him missing, has told investigators that she felt pressured by her boyfriend to get rid of her three kids, reports say.

According to Fox 19, a report from the Preble County Sheriff’s Office says Brittany Gosney, 29, is blaming her boyfriend, James Hamilton, 42, for her decision to drive to Rush Run Wildlife Area in Preble County last Friday and attempt to abandon her kids, including 6-year-old son James Hutchinson.

Investigators say Gosney told them her three kids were out of her minivan and she tried to speed away. Her son tried to get back in as she pulled away and she ended up dragging him, eventually running him over, authorities tell WCPO Channel 9. She told investigators that when she returned to check on Hutchinson, he was dead. She then picked up his body and returned to her home in Middletown with her two other children.

James Hamilton, 42, is charged with abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence in connection with the death of 6-year-old James Hutchinson.

Reports say Hamilton was not present when Hutchinson was killed.

Gosney and Hamilton are accused of taking the boy’s body and dumping it in the Ohio River near Lawrencebrug, Indiana, at about 3 a.m. Sunday, then reporting the boy missing later that morning. Gosney is now being held on a $1 million bond on multiple charges, including murder. Hamilton is charged with abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence. He is in jail on an $800,000 bond.

Meanwhile, search teams have paused the search for Hutchinson’s body because of high water levels on the Ohio River, WCPO reports. The high water and fast current has made the river unsafe, reports say.

“It is frustrating, because you think that if not much time goes by, you’ll have a better indication of where the person may be,” said Tracy Campbell, a spokesperson for North Star International Search and Recovery. “But with this water and the time going past, you don’t know.”
