Bus driver is fired after she tells black boy, 11, who was out of breath: ‘Since George Floyd, that’s what you all say, but I don’t see a knee on your neck’

A white bus driver in Louisiana has lost her job after allegedly racially taunting a sixth-grade student.

The alleged incident took place in St. Bernard on April 9, when Rashad Gabriel ran to catch the bus to Trist Middle School in the morning. By the time he boarded, he was breathing hard and his face mask and slipped beneath his nose.

The bus driver reportedly scolded 11-year-old Rashad for his mask, who tried to explain he was out of breath from running.

‘Since George Floyd, that’s what you all say, but I don’t see a knee on your neck,’ the driver allegedly told the young black boy.

Rashad’s mother Rose Gabriel was furious when her son told her what had happened.

‘I just started crying,’ Gabriel told WWL. ‘Don’t make him feel inferior. He’s not inferior to nothing.

‘He’s equal to any of those students on that bus.’

The remarks were reportedly heard by Rashad’s fellow students and caught on the onboard bus camera, although footage from the bus has not been made available to the public.

On Monday, Gabriel drove Rashad to school to avoid the driver and reported the comment to the St. Bernard Parish School District.

When confronted, the bus driver admitted she made the comment, Gabriel said.

She has since lost her job.

The driver’s comment related to George Floyd was killed last May when police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck, with Floyd memorably saying ‘I can’t breathe’ prior to passing out.

Chauvin was convicted of three charges related to the death of Floyd on Tuesday, for which he could spend up to 75 years in jail.

Opening statements in the trial took place on March 29, just a week and a half before the bus incident, when the trial was already capturing the nation’s attention.

Meanwhile, School Superintendent Doris Voitier voiced her disgust over the driver’s racist comments.

‘I can’t defend that. I don’t condone that,’ Voitier said. ‘What she said is offensive and inappropriate. It was racially insensitive. And we took appropriate action.’

Gabriel, meanwhile, was pleased by the resolution of the matter.

‘It made me relieved that I know she’s no long on the bus with my son or anybody else’s child,’ Gabriel said.
